Over the past few years, I’ve had more conversations with buyers who are seriously considering the Ozarks over a major metro area.
For some, it’s about affordability.
For others, it’s about lifestyle.
Most of the time, it’s a combination of both.

Here’s what I’m seeing:
1. Cost of living matters more than ever
In many large cities, home prices and everyday expenses have continued to rise. For a lot of buyers, that math simply doesn’t work long-term.
When buyers start looking in the Ozarks, they’re often surprised at what their budget can actually do. A yard. Extra bedrooms. Maybe even acreage.
2. Remote work changed everything
Five years ago, relocating usually meant changing jobs.
Now, many buyers can keep their career and choose their location. Around 1 in 5 workers today works remotely at least part of the time. That flexibility has opened the door for people to move closer to family, find more affordable housing, or live somewhere that aligns better with their values.
The Ozarks has become a smart choice for remote professionals who want reliable infrastructure, good schools, and a lower cost of living.
3. People are rethinking their commute
The average commute in large metro areas is often more than 30 each way. That adds up to hundreds of hours a year spent in traffic.
In the Ozarks, many buyers are used to 10 to 15 minute drives. That time savings matters. It means more evenings at home, more time with family, and less daily stress.
That quality-of-life shift is bigger than people expect.
4. Rural and smaller regions are seeing real population growth
Between 2020 and 2023, rural and smaller counties gained nearly one million new residents across the country.
That tells us something important. People are not just staying in major metro areas by default anymore. They are choosing communities that offer room to breathe, stronger connection, and affordability.
The Ozarks fits right into that shift.
5. Land, lakes, and livability
One of the biggest draws to this area is access to the outdoors.
For buyers coming from dense metro areas, this kind of access is refreshing. It encourages a different pace. You can work hard during the week and truly unplug on the weekend.
That balance is harder to find in major cities where everything feels fast and crowded- plus, the Ozarks is really hard to beat when it comes to lakes, trails, parks, and beautiful scenery!
6. Community feels like community again
You see neighbors.
You bump into friends at local spots.
You get to know the barista and the folks at the hardware store.
It doesn’t feel anonymous.
That sense of connection is something people are actively looking for, especially after the past few years. Buyers want to feel rooted somewhere, not just busy.
7. The local economy continues to grow
Springfield and the surrounding Ozarks region continue to grow in healthcare, education, and small business development.
Buyers are encouraged by steady job opportunities, strong local employers, and a market that feels stable rather than extreme.
8. There’s room to build long-term roots
For many families, this move is about the future.
They want space for kids to play.
Room for a garden or a shop.
A home they can grow into instead of out of.
The Ozarks offers options that make long-term planning realistic.
More buyers are choosing the Ozarks because it checks more boxes than they expected. Financially. Practically. Personally.
For most, the Ozarks aren’t a compromise, but rather a shift in priorities.
And for many people right now, that shift just makes sense!
If you’re considering a move or simply curious what living here could look like, I’m always happy to talk through it with you.
